In 2012, the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) received reports of unintended exposures to the packets of laundry detergent by children under 5 years old. The American Cleaning Institute (ACI) recognized that, whilst millions of people use these products safely in their homes every day – accidents can still happen.

Drawing on their long history of educating consumers about the safe use and storage of home cleaning products, the ACI decided it was time to take action to help prevent these accidents from occurring by launching the ACI KEY Pledge laundry safety campaign. This highly successful campaign is aimed to increase parent and caregiver education and awareness for the proper usage, storage and handling of the new laundry product form – single-load liquid laundry packets to ultimately reduce accidents from happening.

Consumers can get involved by taking the KEY Pledge online at and by following these simple steps to a safe laundry room and routine:

  • Keep single-load liquid laundry packets out of reach of children
  • Educate your family and friends about the safe use and storage of these new laundry products
  • You serve a key role in laundry safety

In a recent conversation with campaign leader Nancy Bock, Senior Vice President, Education at the American Cleaning Institute,  she told us “it is vital for parents and caregivers to keep single-load liquid laundry packet away from children, in order to prevent the risk of injury from unintended ingestion or exposure to eyes.” She added, “When you ask people to take a pledge and become engaged in an issue like laundry safety, they are more likely to remember, which will increase the reach and impact of the campaign. As an industry association we care about consumers and their families–safety is always our top priority.”

The campaign runs until December 31st, but has already proven to be incredibly successful, with over 17,000 pledges from all fifty states. Nancy attributes part of the success to ACI member support and partnerships. “We were able to engage partners that we have strong relationships with, such as the AAFCS (American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences) who transferred the messaging to consumers they reach and teach in their communities.”

Over the years, the ACI has led a number of consumer campaigns to help individuals, families and communities achieve better living with health and hygiene initiatives. Laundry safety has been the focus in consumer education programs for many years and we look forward to promoting more ACI safety campaigns in the future.
